There are many beautiful legends about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival, among which the most widely spread is "Chang'e flying to the moon".

According to legend, Hou Yi, Chang'e's husband, is a hero. One day, the Western Queen on Kunlun Mountain gave Dayi a pill of fairy medicine. It is said that people who take this medicine can not only live forever, but also become immortal. However, Hou Yi did not want to leave Chang'e, so she hidden the fairy medicine in the treasure chest. After the apprentice of Hou Yi knew, on August 15th of the lunar calendar, he forced Chang'e to hand over the fairy medicine. Chang'e did not obey, swallowed the fairy medicine, and as a result he was as light as a bird and flew to the Moon Palace. When Hou Yi knew it, he was very distressed, so he served melon and fruit food in the hospital and pinned his thoughts on Chang'e. The folks followed suit and worshiped the moon.

Hou Yi and the Ten Suns

A long time ago, there were ten suns in the sky. They scorched the land, the crops dried up, and people were too hot to breathe. A young man, Hou Yi, saw it, and after untold hardships, he shot down all the nine suns in the sky and obeyed Chang'e's suggestion to save the last sun to shine on the earth and everything.
